Columbia University Amnesty International Presents a Speaker Event:
"In Our Name, Beyond Our Laws?: Private Contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan"
Tuesday November 17, 8:00pm
Jerome Greene Hall of Columbia University School of Law
Room 104
A conversation with Susan Burke and Jeremy Scahill about private military contractors, human rights, and the future of warfare.
Susan Burke is a partner with Burke ONeil LLC, a law firm specializing in International Human Rights law. The firm is currently bringing civil actions against private military contractors in Iraq in an effort to hold the companies accountable for the various human rights abuses they have committed throughout the conflict. Susan serves as lead counsel on a number of these cases, specifically those related to the shootings of Iraqi civilians by Blackwater Xe employees and the torture of Iraqi victims at the Abu Ghraib prison by private military contractors.
Jeremy Scahill is the author of "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army". His book was a groundbreaking effort in exposing the political and moral conflicts surrounding one of the most notorious private military contractors in the Iraq war. He has since become an authority on Private Military Contractors, and is a frequent contributor to "The Nation" magazine, and a regular guest on "Democracy Now" and
"The Rachel Maddow Show."

Mintz Levin would like to invite Columbia and Barnard students to an information session about its Project Analyst Program. The information session will take place on November 4, 2009 at 5 pm in the Conference Room in the Career Center. The presentation will provide students with information about our employment opportunities and a chance to speak with representatives from Mintz Levin. Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. celebrates a tradition of excellence as one of the largest and most sophisticated full-service law firms in the region. Through the Project Analyst Program, Mintz Levin offers college graduates interested in the law the opportunity to engage in challenging and interesting work in its fast-paced environment. During their two-year tenure, Project Analysts gain practical experience and valuable exposure to law and business by working along side Mintz Levin's attorneys and senior professionals.
The Project Analyst Program was founded in 1989 with a class of five Project Analysts in the Boston office. In response to the rapidly changing and increasingly competitive nature of the legal market, the Program has expanded to cover over ten practice areas, and now includes nine Project Analysts. The Boston, New York and Washington, D.C offices
of Mintz Levin currently staff Project Analysts. In these offices, Project Analysts have worked in the following practice areas: Antitrust & Federal Regulation; Business & Finance; Communications; Employment, Labor & Benefits; Environmental; Firm Management; Health Care; Immigration; Intellectual Property; Litigation; Public Finance and Real Estate, as well as with Mintz Levin's consulting affiliate ML Strategies. In addition to working in designated practice areas, Project Analysts may assist attorneys with case work for pro bono and community service initiatives, for example, by interviewing clients and drafting affidavits. Outside of pro bono legal work, Project Analysts participate
in volunteer projects, charitable events, and coordinate many of the pro bono and community service activities.
At Mintz Levin, Project Analysts can expect to utilize a broad range of skills to meet the needs of the Firm and its clients. Under the guidance of attorneys and senior professionals, Project Analysts research factual issues, summarize legal and regulatory provisions, review and analyze documents, organize data, draft reports, and produce computer presentations. Project Analysts also conduct financial analyses, track
regulatory activity, and monitor industry trends. They create and maintain databases to facilitate communication between Mintz Levin and the business community, non-profit organizations, health care providers, and federal, state and local government officials.
Project Analysts work as a team. Together, they manage the Project Analyst Program recruiting and orientation process, and other programmatic issues.
The Project Analyst Program opens up a world of opportunities to its graduates. Upon completing the Program, Project Analysts have pursued graduate studies in law, education, public policy, the humanities, business, and medicine. They have also pursued opportunities in areas including, but not limited to, journalism, consulting, and public
relations. For more information on the Firm and the Project Analyst program, please
go to www.mintz.com. Applications are accepted through LionShare (for Columbia) and eRecruiting (for Barnard) until January 26, 2010.
We look forward to seeing you on November 4th!
